Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

For many Americans, Cinco De Mayo is just an excuse to go out and enjoy Mexican food and margaritas. The meaning behind the hHoliday is often unknown by many Americans who go out and celebrate the day of. The holiday is actually to remember the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.1

On this day, the Mexican army defeated the French Forces of Napoleon III and beat the odds against them. In the city of Puebla where the battle took place, the celebration includes huge parades and reenacting of the battle with people dressed up as Mexican and French soldiers2. They also drink water flavored with fruit vs. tequila! Here in America, the celebration has transformed more into appreciation of Mexican-American culture.

Either way you celebrate this holiday, please drink responsibly and spread the true meaning to your family and friends to honor this special day. Happy Cinco De Mayo!
