We at LegalEASE are wishing you and your family a happy and safe 4th of July! This fourth of July will be the 241st anniversary[1] of our nation’s independence. Below are some patriotic fun facts that may surprise you.
- The Continental Congress voted for independence on July 2nd, 1776, but Congress did not approve the declaration for another two days[2].
- John Hancock and Charles Thomson were the only ones to sign the Declaration of Independence[3] on July 4th. Most of Congress did not sign until August 2.
- In remembrance of Independence Day two years later, George Washington ordered a double ration of rum for his soldiers to celebrate[4] on July 4th.
- The stars on the original American flag are in a circle to indicate equality between the states.
- The White House’s first official 4th of July party was not held until 1801[5].
